Repair Clinic: Bicycles (Intro and Advanced)

Introduction to Bike Maintenance/Spring Tune-up:

An introduction to bike maintenance: in this course, we will cover all the basics that a cyclist should know before they hit the open road. Participants are encouraged to bring their bikes with them and wear proper attire.   It is recommended that participants wear clothing that they do not mind getting greasy, safety glasses and closed toe shoes.   Topics will include but not limited to:

  1. What to carry with you when you ride: mobile phone, ID, tire levers, spare tube, patch kit, multi tool, tire boot, inflation device (co2 or pump), and much more.
  2. Bike safety check: visual inspection of frame and components, tire inspection, tire pressure, brakes, lubrication, gears, bounce test. The ABC’s of bike check.
  3. How to repair a flat tire: Step by step instructions on how to properly fix a flat tire. We will include details such as removing the wheel, diagnosing what caused the flat, inspecting the tire, rim and tube, replacing the tube, patching a tube. This will be hands on learning exercise.
  4. Proper bike cleaning and lubrication:   how to clean and lubricate your complete bike. We will focus on the frame, drivetrain, and wheels.     This will cover what items you need to gather to clean and lubricate your bike.

This is a 2 hour class with 5-15 people.  Learn how to keep your bike happy and safe, see how to make basic repairs and tune-ups.

Advanced Bike Maintenance

The Advanced bike maintenance class is for the DIY’er that wants to perform a complete tune up on their bike, to keep it running safely and smoothly.   Participants are encouraged to bring their bikes with them and wear proper attire.   It is recommended that participants wear clothing that they do not mind getting greasy, safety glasses and closed toe shoes.   Topics will include but not limited to:

    1. Cables and Housing: How to inspect and install new cables and housing.   This will cover both shift and brake systems.
    2. Deraillers: We will set up both front and rear deraillers covering derailler position, limit screw adjustments, b screw tension, cable adjustments.
    3. Brakes: This will cover all braking types ie. Cantilevers, v brakes, rim brakes, hydraulic and mechanical disc brakes.
    4. Wheels: How to true wheels, adjust hub bearings, install and remove a cassette
