It’s a Launch!

About 100 people turned out to see the launch of the U.S.S. 2 Sense yesterday, including the Mayor and a whole lot of the City Council, School Committee and Fire Department Rescue Team!

We got a great piece in the Daily Item here, too: LYNN STUDENTS LAUNCH BOAT THEY MADE FROM SCRATCH

The weather cooperated, but as an old sailer friend would say, she kept us honest – the wind picked up to just over 12 knots (onshore, fortunately)  just as the boat hit the water.  It was the first time these kids had ever been in a boat, forget rowing their own vessel, and they handled it like old salts.  The Fire Department Rescue boat joined us just off the ramp, and regaled us with some siren play, and Carl Carlsen read us a passage from his book Brickyard Stories 2.0, to give us some context and history of the actual site.

It was an afternoon to remember.

Honestly, there are no words.  The Mayor said that this is the kind of thing that happens when the community comes together to support a passion.  Bob McCarty from Community Boatbuilding said he’d never, in the ten years he’s been doing this, has he seen a city turn out in such force to see a launch.  City Councillors commented that this city was fiercely hungry for this type of project, this energy, and the work of these kids.

All we can say is, this is only the beginning, folks, just watch us!

Workshops are BACK! Cyanotype at The Brickyard

It seems like it’s been a long time since our last class….  well, it has, but it’s like riding a bicycle!  We’re right back at it, and our first classes were a huge success.

Thanks to member Sally Jacobson and friend (and cohort), Stefanie Timmermann, we had a couple of really fun, really successful classes, and the re-launch of workshops and classes at The Brickyard is OFF!

Check out our classes pages, and we hope to see you soon!

Boat Launch- You’re Invited!

This just in!

On Wednesday June 14th at 4:00 at the Blossom Street Extension Boat Ramp we’re launching our first boat!

The students will formally present this boat to a group of Lynn Veterans for their use:

Bob McCarty, our mentor from Community Boatbuilding will deliver the boat, the students will present the boat to our Veterans and then the Mayor Nicholson will say a few words about this, the kids’ accomplishment and the important lessons learned about not only boat building, but too, honoring Veterans.

We’ve added a special Rewards level to our Patronicity campaign for you, if you want to support this event with a “ticket” donation!  Check that out here: Boat Launch!

(Donations are not required, we hope you can join us and meet the team in any case..

Have a great, safe Memorial Day weekend and see you on the 14th!
