When did you join the Brickyard?

I joined in 2019 right before my wedding. I searched online for someplace I could rent a laser cutter to create a welcome sign for our wedding.

What do you do (make, learn…) here?

80% of my time is spent doing woodworking. I joined with the intention of building furniture for the house. And I’ve built a desk, cabinets, an entry table, couch table, cutting boards, carved spoons, and more. But what I love about the Brickyard is that with the other 20% I can really just play and experiment with different things. I do a little bit of 3D printing, laser cutting, large format photo prints, turning on the lathe, and basic metalworking.

If you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

A lion, without question. There’s just something regal about big cats.

Something I want to learn is…

There are so many things. Metalworking and fabrication. To speak French and Bulgarian. To surf. To repair motors.

Do you have any side-gigs or other projects?

After getting into woodworking through the Brickyard, I needed to start creating project plans for some of the more complicated furniture designs I had in my head. I learned SketchUp to create plans and that’s led to a business. I built and operate a SketchUp tutorials site that helps other woodworkers design their projects in SketchUp at SketchUp for Woodworkers.

What’s the best thing you have ever made:

The best thing I’ve made yet has probably been the receptionists desk for my wife’s gym (Nova Strength Studio personal training in Malden). It is a mix of natural and painted wood. It’s definitely been the piece that’s fetched me the most compliments.

Warning, doesn’t read manuals. Guaranteed to try to “just give it a go” first
