Meet the Maker: Tim B.

Your name:

Tim B.

When did you join the Brickyard?

So far back I don’t remember (but I am not a charter member).

What do you do (make, learn…) here?

I make chocolates, which involves 3D printing and laser cutting to make positive molds, and then vacuum molding to make chocolate molds from that. I am also doing a fair amount related to customizing Hobie kayak/sailboats.

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?

Can problem solving and fixing things be a superpower?

What’s the best thing you have ever made:

High voltage switch (patented)

If you had a warning label, what would yours say?

Warning. Interested in too many things.

What’s the best part about The Brickyard?

We seem to be constantly getting new equipment. I think that we are a shark that will die if new things aren’t happening.

If you could be any animal, what would it be and why?

Velociraptor – Intelligent group hunters.

Something I want to learn is…

more cybersecurity

What’s the best part about The Brickyard?:

There is almost no limit to what you can make or learn here. If they don’t have it, if you just ask they will probably find a way to get it for you.

Meet the Maker: Mike M

Your Name:

Mike M.

When did you join the Brickyard?

March 2021

What do you do (make, learn…) here?

Mostly woodworking, but I’m dabbling a bit in other areas (metalworking, electronics, etc.)

Favorite Quote:

“The first draft of anything is shit” – Ernest Hemmingway

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?

I would love to have a montage power to make my projects go by as fast as the Youtube videos I watch and think “oh yeah, that will be easy.”

If you had a warning label, what would yours say?

“Highly caffeinated”

What’s the best part about The Brickyard?

I love the variety of things that everyone is working on- I signed up just looking for a table saw to use, but I’ve been able to learn so much from everyone’s diverse expertise.

Meet the Maker: Liz K

Yup, it’s been a while for our Meet the Maker series, but here we are again, with a whole bunch of maker-shenanigans to treat you to!  May we introduce, Liz K and the Armand’s Joy!

Your name:

Liz K.

When did you join the Brickyard?

April 2021

What do you do (make, learn…) here?

I’m restoring the Armand’s Joy. A sailboat my Grampy built from a kit in 1997. It’s had some hard years in storage and I’m bringing it back to its glory. I’m also expanding my knowledge of woodworking beyond the basics.

What’s your favorite piece of advice, and where did you hear it?

When you can’t sleep because something is on your mind – if you can do something about it right then, get up and do it. But if you can’t, let it go until morning when you can. I always thought it was from my Great Aunt Betty. Turns out it’s advice my mom had given TO her.

Favorite joke:

What happened when the blue ship crashed into the red ship? The sailors were marooned.

What’s the most ridiculous fact you know?

The color orange is named after the fruit. The fruit is not named for the color. It’s why people have red hair or refer to the red breast of a robin. Those things were described before the color orange had a name.

If you had a warning label, what would yours say?

Will leave seltzer cans everywhere.

What’s the best part about The Brickyard?

No matter what you’re working on, you can usually find someone to talk through a problem/challenge or to help set up equipment or to help laugh at whatever mess you made.
